Guide: Questions to deal with before you buy a latex mattress

What are the advantages of a latex mattress over a cold foam mattress?

Mattresses may look similar from the outside, but if you look at their inner workings, it can be fundamentally different from each other.

  • Elasticity

Due to the good elasticity, the latex mattress can be used by babies and toddlers, small and light persons and people with a high body weight.

  • Zone construction

Due to the zone structure of a latex mattress, the upper body and the hip sink a little more and so the intervertebral discs are optimally relieved. It is therefore also suitable for people with back problems.

  • Suitable for allergy sufferers

If you have a dust mite allergy, then a latex mattress is for you. It is dust-free, hygienic and antibacterial and the cover can be washed.

  • Low noise

A latex mattress is particularly low-noise. So if you sleep on a mattress with your partner, you won’t wake him up by turning on different sides.

  • Heat storage

If you freeze slightly at night, then a mattress made of latex is very suitable for you. Due to its specific structure, it stores heat and you wont feel cold at night.

  • Weight and care

The weight is one of the few disadvantages. A latex mattress weighs significantly more than a cold foam mattress. It is also less suitable for people who sweat a lot as it is less breathable.

Due to the different structure and the materials used, each type of mattress offers its own unique properties, which can be more or less noticed while doing different testing.

In summary, a latex mattress offers you the following advantages over a cold foam mattress:

  • Point elasticity & adaptability
  • Zone construction
  • Suitable for allergy & back problems
  • Suitable for people with higher body weight
  • Suitable for all sleep types
  • Suitable for babies and toddlers

Similar to a cold foam mattress, the latex mattress has excellent point of elasticity and adapts perfectly to the body and the slatted base. However, while the cold foam mattress is suitable for people with average body weight (40 to 90 kg), latex mattresses can also be used by heavier people, but the mattress is also very suitable for babies and toddlers.

By building into different zones, it gives you optimal adaptation to different body types. For example, the shoulder and hip area is structured in such a way that they sink slightly more than the legs, which provides a holistic relief of the spine.

This ensures that the intervertebral discs are kept in their natural form and pain caused by incorrect loads is prevented. This zone structure is not given with a cold foam mattress, but this should not mean that the spine is not also relieved.

Latex mattresses are very suitable for allergy sufferers with a dust mite allergy. The mattress is dust-free, hygienic and antibacterial and thus rejects mites. The cover of the latex mattress can also be washed. A cold foam mattress with good care is also suitable for allergy sufferers, but does not come close to the level of a latex mattress.

Did you know that latex is actually a natural product?

The raw material for natural latex comes from tropical rubber or rubber trees from Southeast Asia. Natural latex is produced from the juice of rubber trees in a special technical foaming process.

The latex mattress stores heat very well due to its construction and if you tend to feel cold at night, the latex version is very suitable for you. Another advantage is that it is noise free so you can easily turn around in bed as often as you want without waking someone up because of the noise.

The disadvantages of a latex mattress compared to a cold foam mattress is the elaborate care and the weight of the latex mattress. If a cold foam mattress weighs between 11 and 18 kg, the latex version with 14 to 30 kg is significantly heavier.

Also, it is not quite as good for people who sweat heavily, since one prefers to resort to a cold foam mattress because the ventilation of this is much better and the bed linen does not get wet so quickly.

How much does a latex mattress cost?

Latex mattresses are available in all different price ranges. The proportion of natural rubber plays an important role – the higher this proportion, the higher the price. Mattresses are everyday objects and you will find a suitable mattress for every need and in every price range.

Mattress prices:

  • Synthetic latex mattress from approx.  $130
  • Natural latex mattress from approx. $400
  • Mixed latex mattress from approx.  $229
  • Layer latex mattress from approx.  300$

Synthetic latex mattresses are the cheapest option. A mattress with a size of 90×200 cm is available for as long as around $130, as the production is easier and cheaper than with natural latex. If you reach for a model of identical size, which is made of mixed latex, you have to reckon with a price starting from 229 dollars. The higher the proportion of natural rubber, the higher the price. A layer edhery mattress is available from around $300. If you choose a product made from 100% natural rubber, you pay a price starting from about $400.

Who is a latex mattress suitable for?

Latex mattresses are suitable for different people due to their special properties. These include allergy sufferers, because of the hypoallergenic effect of the mattress.

Due to the good temperature regulation, it is also suitable for people who freeze at night and the point-elastic properties are suitable for all sleeper types, as well as for people who have back problems.

Below is an overview for whom a latex mattress is best suited for:

  • Allergy sufferers
  • Side, back & stomach sleepers
  • People with back problems
  • People who freeze at night
  • Babies and toddlers

Latex mattresses, however, require a lot of care and are rather expensive. So if you are a bit lazy and want a rather inexpensive mattress you should resort to a different mattress type. If you sweat very heavily at night, the latex variant is also not the best choice and due to the high weight it is not very suitable for the elderly.

Where can I buy a latex mattress?

Latex mattresses can be purchased online or directly from specialist retailers. The advantage of the specialist trade is that you can test the mattress right on site and can take advantage of individual advice from the seller. Online you certainly have a better overview of models from different suppliers and a clear price comparison.

According to our research, the most well-known distributors of latex mattresses are:

  • Linenspa
  • Turf & Needle
  • Amazon
  • Casper

What do I have to pay attention to when buying a latex mattress?

Quality features of a latex mattress are as follows:

  • Hardness
  • Proportion of natural latex
  • Different zones
  • Core height

An important thing to pay attention to when buying a mattress is the degree of hardness. A latex mattress distinguishes between 3 different degrees of hardness (for some manufacturers it is 4 or 5 degrees of hardness). Which one you choose depends on your body weight and can be found in the table below.

If you weigh over 90 kg, you should also choose a mattress with coconut inlay, as it gives more strength.

Another good idea that you should pay attention to when buying is the proportion of natural latex. The higher this proportion, the higher the point of elasticity and the better the support function is. This means that the mattress adapts better to your body and the slatted base. However, this also leads to a higher price, as we have mentioned before.

The natural latex should be at least 70%. If the manufacturer does not explicitly indicate whether natural latex is used, you can assume that it is a synthetic latex mattress.

Different lying zones are another quality feature of a latex mattress. Normally, latex mattresses are divided into 3, 5 or 7 lying areas to ensure your optimal sleeping experience.

Another point to look out for is that the core height of the mattress is 12 to 16 centimeters. The higher your body weight, the higher the mattress should be.

Decision: What types of latex mattresses are available and which one is right for you?

A distinction can be made between the following four types of latex mattresses:

  • Synthetic latex mattress
  • Natural latex mattress
  • Mixed latex mattress
  • Layer latex mattress

The mattresses differ in the raw material used and their structure, which has various advantages and disadvantages.

Depending on what is important to you and what characteristics you prefer, a different type of mattress is suitable. In the following section, we would like to help you find out which type of latex mattress is perfect for you. Therefore, we present all the above-mentioned latex models below and clearly show what the respective advantages and disadvantages are.

What distinguishes a synthetic latex mattress and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

A synthetic latex mattress is made of synthetically produced latex, which is extracted from crude oil and is very inexpensive.

A special process is used to produce a low-cost mattress with good point elasticity from the crude oil. However, this is slightly lower than with a natural latex mattress, which in turn results in a higher strength. Compared to a natural latex mattress, the synthesis latex mattress is more susceptible and less durable. Elasticity also decreases faster.

Benefits

  • Good point elasticity (but deeper than natural latex mattress)
  • Inexpensive
  • Higher strength than natural latex mattress

Disadvantages

  • Elasticity decreases faster
  • Reduced durability as a natural latex mattress
  • Manufactured from crude oil
  • Slight odor at the beginning

Smell-sensitive people at the beginning can find the slight smell disturbing. With good ventilation, however, it soon evaporates.

Environmentally conscious people may mind the use of pure crude oil for the production.

What distinguishes a natural latex mattress and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Advantage is that there are no metal components, which would result in electromagnetic attraction and could affect sleep quality. Therefore, the natural latex mattress is also great for people with insomnia or headaches.

The rubber tree used for the production of this mattress is sustainably grown on plantations and requires around 1/10 of the energy needed in the production of synthetic latex mattresses. Due to its natural origin, the mattress is completely recyclable and very environmentally friendly.

Benefits

  • Good point elasticity
  • Permanent elasticity
  • Longevity
  • Sustainable
  • No metal components

Disadvantages

  • Expensive variant
  • Heaviest model
  • Slight odor at the beginning
  • Quality fluctuations

However, the natural raw material also has disadvantages. Thus, the production of natural latex is very expensive and quality fluctuations can occur. The rubber from the juice of the tree also ensures that this version has the heaviest variant of a latex mattress.

If a mattress with natural latex is written on, this does not always mean that it is also made of 100% natural rubber. It must be explicitly written in this way, otherwise it is a mixed latex mattress

What distinguishes a mixed latex mattress and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

A mixed latex mattress is made of synthetic and natural rubber and combines the properties of these two substances.

The relationship between natural latex and synthetic latex is not standardized and therefore varies between manufacturer and model. A common mixing ratio is 40% natural latex and 60% synthetic latex. The natural latex content is an important quality criteria and in general it can be said that the higher this proportion, the better the mattress is (but its also more expensive).

The point elasticity of the mixed latex mattress is better than with pure synthetic latex and quality fluctuations that can occur due to the natural raw material are compensated by the synthetic portion. Compared to a pure natural latex mattress, the mixing form is lighter and also cheaper.

Benefits

  • Point elasticity better than with synthetic latex
  • Synthetic latex content compensates for quality fluctuations
  • Lighter than natural latex mattress
  • Cheaper than natural latex mattress

Disadvantages

  • Lower support force and point of elasticity than natural latex mattress
  • Slight odor at the beginning

Compared to a pure natural latex mattress, the mixed form has a lower support force and point elasticity and has a slight odor at the beginning.

Mixed latex mattresses, as the name suggests, consist of both natural and synthesis latex. They offer better point elasticity than pure synthesis latex mattresses.

What distinguishes a layer latex mattress and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

A layer latex mattress, as the name suggests, consists of several layers. These consist of several layers of latex, which alternate with foam elements and are firmly connected to each other by means of adhesives.

The ratio of the two fabrics also depends on the manufacturer and the model. The foam layer is often made of coconut rubber, as this gives the mattress more hardness and is ideally suited for people with higher body weight. The goal of such a layer latex mattress is to optimize the positive properties of foam and latex.

Benefits

  • Cheaper than natural latex
  • Good point elasticity
  • Good air circulation
  • Breathability
  • Suitable for people with higher body weight

Disadvantages

  • Slight odor

Such a model has good point elasticity and optimal lying properties. The air circulation and breathability is significantly increased and due to the foam layers the mattress is well suited for people with high weight. Due to the raw materials used, this is a rather inexpensive variant.

Purchasing criteria

Below we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate latex mattresses. This should make it easier to decide whether a particular mattress is suitable for you or not.

In summary, these criteria are as follows:

  • Structure Core & Moisture Regulation
  • Manufacturing process
  • Dimensions
  • Core height & mattress height
  • Lying zones
  • Lying feeling & hardness
  • Density
  • Reference material & hypoallergenic
  • OEKO-TEX Certification

In the following paragraphs you can read what the individual purchase criteria are and how you can classify them.

Structure Core & Moisture Regulation

The nucleus can consist of synthetic latex, natural latex or a mixture of both. Another possibility is the production in layers, whereby additional foam is used.

When buying, you should make sure that the proportion of natural rubber is at least 70%. The higher this proportion, the better the lying quality, since the point elasticity is also better. A higher proportion of synthesis latex can lead to increased sweating, as they are less ventilated and have insufficient moisture transport.

In general, however, latex mattresses are better ventilated than other mattress types, because of the many cavities. These are made with the help of heating rods and ensure a good bed climate.

Manufacturing process

Conventional mattresses are cut out of a large block. This is not the case with latex mattresses, but this is the disadvantage of a higher price.

For each size and zone there is a separate shape in which the latex core is produced. There are three possible types of production, which are described in more detail in the following chapter Trivia.

The following are the procedures and the respective characteristics of the mattresses:

  • Talalay process: open-pored material, air & moisture permeable
  • Dunlop method: typical pores (= pen latex)
  • SonoCore process: uniform structure, good moisture balance

The type of mattress that is made depends on the manufacturer. Also, not all procedures are equally complex, which influences the price in one direction or the other.

Dimensions

Mattresses are available in all possible sizes. When buying, however, you should make sure that it is 20 cm longer than your height.

In terms of width, it depends on whether it is a single bed or a double bed for which you need a mattress. Your personal comfort is also important when choosing the width, as is the available space in your bedroom.

The sizes are given in width x length. The most common sizes can be found in the table below:

Children’s mattresses 70 x 140 cm

60 x 120 cm

Baby mattresses 70 x 140 cm

60 x 120 cm

Single mattresses 80 x 200 cm

90 x 200 cm

100 x 200 cm

120 x 200 cm

140 x 200 cm

Couple mattresses 140 x 200 cm

160 x 200 cm

180 x 200 cm

200 x 200 cm

Many manufacturers also offer custom-made products, but you have to expect a considerably higher price.

Core height and mattress height

When sleeping, an orthopedic healthy posture is important, which is not guaranteed with mattresses that are too thin. A too low overall height can lead to the sinking of heavy body parts up to the slatted base, especially in the side system. There is a curvature of the spine and back pain.

In addition to the back, high mattresses are also important for sleeping comfort and make it easier for older people to lie down and get up from bed.

The mattress height depends on the weight. The more you wiel, the higher the mattress should be.

If your body weight is in the normal range, a height of 12 to 16 cm is sufficient for a good sleeping climate. If you are slightly heavier than the average, you should resort to a latex mattress that is higher than 16 cm. Because on deeper mattresses you sink too deep, which can lead to back pain.

Lying zones

Lying areas divide mattresses into different areas to ensure an optimal feeling of sleep.

A latex mattress should have at least 3 lying zones to optimally support the shoulder, waist and pelvis and keep the spine in its natural shape. Depending on the weight of the body area, the mattress has a different hole thickness and thus promotes the adaptation of the material to the body.

Mattresses are usually divided into 3, 5 or 7 zones. The more zones, the better the tuning to different parts of the body.

Lying feeling & hardness

The hardness of a mattress indicates whether you are softer or harder. The latex mattress is available in different degrees of hardness. Which one you choose depends on your body weight.

A possible classification of the hardness degrees is the following:

  • H1 (soft) – Up to 120 pounds
  • H2 (medium) – Up to 150 pounds
  • H3 (hard) – Over 150 pounds

However, these are not standardized and depending on the manufacturer, the mattresses can be divided into up to 5 degrees of hardness.

In addition to your weight, body size, physique and your preference for sleeping on a softer or harder surface play an important role in choosing the right degree of hardness.

Density

The  weight room tells how much material in pound was processed in core production per volume (m3). A low room weight tells you that the latex mattress has more air pores and is therefore faster.

Mattresses with a higher  weight room can generally be described as higher quality and longer-lasting than those with a lower room weight.

Natural latex mattresses have a weight room of 70 to 90 kg/m3 (depending on the degree of hardness) and are significantly heavier than other mattress types, such as the cold foam mattress. This can play a role in older or petite people. Because the latex mattress should be turned every few months.

People who have a higher body weight should resort to a model that has a higher space weight to reduce the penetration.

Reference material & allergy-related suitability

The cover absorbs the sweat of the sleeping person at night and protects the latex core from moisture, hair and skin scales. It also works against bacteria and mites, which is beneficial for allergy sufferers.

The material used is cotton, wool, breathable Tencel (= cellulose fiber) or a double cloth cover made of Microcare or Amicor. Through a zipper all around, you can quickly remove and wash the cover. It depends on the manufacturer whether you can wash the mattress cover 40 or 60°C.

The breathable and durable material of the cover ensures an optimal bed climate and also has an anti-bacterial effect and against mites. As a result, the latex mattresses are ideally suited for allergy sufferers.

OEKO-TEX Certification

This is globally uniform and independent testing and certification system for textile products of all processing levels. The product is tested for certain substances such as chemicals, dyes, etc., which are regulated by law.

Strict scientific testing procedures test the product, in our case the latex mattress for pollution. Substances that are resistant to bacteria such as triclosan and insecticides or plasticizers such as phthalates are not to be seen in this test.

However, there are still certain substances, such as Anthony, which has a flammable effect in the event of a fire, which can be used in the production process. Optical brighteners may also be used, which are not particularly good for the environment.

Basically, an OEKO-TEX certified mattress means that high and effective product safety is guaranteed. However, you should take a close look at which unfavorable substances are still permitted in this process.

Trivia: Facts worth knowing about latex mattress

Finally, we would like to answer some important questions about the topic of latex mattresses and their use. You’ll learn how to make latex mattresses, how to clean them, and what slatted base you should choose.

How is a latex mattress made?

Natural or synthetic rubber is used for the production of a latex mattress. This raw material is processed in a special process, whereby the latex mattress is created.

Petroleum is used in the production of a synthetic latex mattress, and the juice of the rubber tree (Hevea Brazilsis) is taken from a natural latex mattress.

Different substances such as antioxidants and sulfur are added to the latex milk. The mixture is then foamed and poured into a mold.

The material is liquefied and mixed by rod-shaped heating elements at just under 100°C (this process is also called vulcanization) and dried. This creates many air bubbles in the mattress, which serve to ventilate the core and thus regulate the moisture.

This manufacturing process is particularly gentle and does not produce any toxic substances.

Next, a cover of mostly cotton is attached to the mattress core to protect the skin from an allergy.

There are three different methods for making latex mattresses, which are of different ages. In all of them, rubber is the starting material to which various additives such as gelling agents, vulcanizers, antioxidants, accelerators, water softeners, soaps and stabilizers are then added.

The main difference is the use of the gelling agent. The Talalay process uses CO2, while the Dunlop and SonoCore processes use NSF (sodium silicofluoride).

Dunlop Process (1929): Steam

Various additives are added to the latex and the mixture is opened with air.

The resulting foam is poured into a mold and heated with heating pins, creating the characteristic holes of the latex mattress (=pen latex). Finally, the whole thing is washed out several times and dried.

The resulting cavities determine the lying properties of the latex core and the hardness.

Talalay Procedure (1956): Freezing

In the Talalay process, the latex core is foamed at 120°C and then shock-frozen at -34°C. This process is repeated several times. Due to the large temperature fluctuations, the bubbles burst into the latex core and an open-pored, air- and moisture-permeable material is created.

This process consumes a great deal of energy (about 5 times as much as the Dunlop process). It is therefore rarely used, as prices are accordingly high.

SonoCore process (2013): Dielectric heating

In this process, the latex foam is produced in a more energy-efficient process, in which the structure of the foam becomes more uniform. It is a patented further development of the principle of vulcanization and drying and ensures good ventilation. This means that moisture can be easily removed.

The SonoCore process is endogenous vulcanization. This means that the material solidifies from the inside out and forms a homogeneous structure. The Dunlop and Talalay processes, on the other hand, have exogenous vulcanization. The material solidifies from the outside to the inside and the irregular structure occurs.

How should I clean a latex mattress?

Latex mattresses require a lot of care in order to be able to use them for as long as possible. You should therefore clean your latex mattress every few weeks with a special remedy and turn it from time to time.

First, wipe the mattress with a damp cloth to remove dust and other residues. You then treat the surface with a special care product. This remedy is necessary to maintain the clamping force and to avoid porosity and brittleness of the mattress. You can buy it directly from the manufacturers or on the Internet.

You should also make sure that you use your mattress regularly (about every 2 months) so that it is equally stressed and you can use it for as long as possible. Part of the cleaning process is that you wash the mattress cover regularly with the washing machine.

Which slatted base should I choose for a latex mattress?

Here are the following things to keep in mind when choosing a slatted frame for your latex mattress:

  • Tight slats
  • Vaulted slats
  • Springing landings
  • Rubber caps at ends

These aspects are important for the mattress to retain its shape. In addition, easily adjustable (also electrically adjustable) slatted frames can be combined with a latex mattress.
